There are many reasons why your dog is eating grass. I have heard so many stories like its going to rain or your dog has a stomach ache or he or she is sick. There are a few scientific reasons why your dog eats grass.
1. It gives your Dog the vitamins they need
Some dogs are fed dog food that is badly deficient in vitamins and minerals that your dog needs. Your dog might just be trying to get some nutrients he needs. If your dogs grass eating habit becomes out of control, you might want to look into buying a better dog food or maybe even look into a vitamin supplement.
2. Your Dog might just like the Taste of Grass
Some dogs eat grass because they are bored or might just like the taste of it. Dogs check out the world with sight, smell, hearing and taste. If it looks good, smells good, it might taste good too. If you dog just eats it on occasion, you probably are ok.
3. Your Dog might be Nervous
All dogs have different habits and some might say those habits are a little goofy. It could just be a way for them to calm themselves, like a baby needing their blanket. Your dog should out grow this habit, but if they don’t, you might want to keep an eye on them and even consult your vet if it gets out of control.
4. Your Dog might have Stomach Ache
If your dog eats a lot of grass they will eventually throw up. Veterinarians have been studying this behavior and believe they do this when they are not feeling well. It is a way for them to self medicate and feel better. In order for your dog to vomit, they have to consume a large amount of grass. Vets have found that only 10 percent of dogs show signs of illness before eating grass.
5. It is a good Source of Fiber
Before dogs were domesticated they would eat all of their kill. This included the stomach which often times had grass in it. Grass is a great source of fiber, that helps your dogs intestinal balance. A little roughage is good for your dog.
So should we let our dogs eat grass?
I would have to say YES. As long as your dogs habit has not become obsessive, a little roughage is actually good for them.
There can be one big concern you should be aware of. Many people spray their lawns with chemicals to control weeds and insects. This can become a very dangerous problem for your dog. Even if you don’t spray your yard, your neighbors might.
Most dogs will just munch on some grass for various reasons. If you feel your dogs habit has become an issue, contact your vet.
