We are all guilty of feeding our dogs table scraps or some leftover food. But there are some foods that are very toxic and should never be fed to our dogs. Here is a list of 11 foods that you should not feed your dogs.
1. Candy and Gum
Foods sweetened with Xylitol are poisonous to dogs. Anything sweetened with Xylitol can cause your dogs blood sugar to drop and may even lead to liver failure. If you think our dog may have eaten some Xylitol, they may become lethargic, start vomiting and become uncoordinated. In really bad cases your dog may start to seizure.
2. Coffee and Tea (Caffeine)
Caffeine is not good for dogs. Actually it can be fatal if too much is consumed. So make sure to keep your dog away from your pop, energy drinks, tea and Coffee. If you feel your dog may have consumed some, watch for symptoms of being hyper, restless, easily agitated and violent. As they get worse you will see seizures and vomiting.
3. Milk And Dairy
Milk based products in general are a no-no. They can cause diarrhea and digestive issues. They may trigger food allergies, that can cause your dog to have frantic itching attacks.
4. Garlic and Onions
Garlic and Onions in any form can cause anemia and kill red blood cells in your dog. It is not ok to mix it in other foods cooked, raw or even in powered form. If your dog does consume a large amount of garlic or onions you should look for signs of vomiting and trouble breathing.
I have been guilty of giving my dogs bacon for years. As with any treat, moderation should be used. Bacon is high in salt content and very rich and fatty that can hard for most dogs stomachs to handle. If your dog consumes a large amount of bacon it could actually be fatal.
We know what alcohol does to humans. It does the same thing to dogs, but it takes a lot less. If you dog consumes large amounts of alcohol it can cause diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness and even death. If your dog is little, make sure to watch this.
Your dog should never get close to food that contains nutmeg. It is a spice that is highly toxic to dogs, and has the potential to do major damage to dogs nervous system.
8. Your Medicine
This one might seem easy, but many people who have a dog that is sick might be tempted to use their own medicine. You should never give your dog over the counter meds unless your Vet says its ok.
9. Macadamia Nuts
It does not take many macadamia nuts to make your dog sick. They will get the shakes, run a temperature and will show weakness in their back legs. What normally happens in these cases is the nuts are combined with chocolate which makes the symptoms worse and can lead to death.
10. Raw Eggs
A lot of people feed their dogs a raw diet. This diet may include raw or uncooked eggs. You should talk to your vet, before deciding to do this. The veterinary medical Assoc. does not think it is a good idea. Your dog could get food poisoning from the bacteria.
11. Raw Meat and Fish
Just like with raw eggs, raw meat and fish can also contain bacteria that can make your dog very sick. There are some fish like salmon, trout and sturgeon that have parasites that can cause diseases in dogs. It can be treated, but the you need to act right away. Your dog will show signs of fever, vomiting and enlargement of the lymph nodes. Make sure to always cook your fish to kill these parasites.
