There are many facts about dogs that most people are not aware of. Dogs are very Intelligent, loyal and protective. Here are 20 interesting facts about dogs that I bet you didn’t know.
1. Dogs Hate Being Hugged.
There is no better way to stress a dog than hugging them. Most dogs will not respond violently, but it makes them feel trapped and they will try to escape and flea. I do not feel all dogs hate hugging, that is based on my experience. I have had dogs that like it and others who don’t. It just depends on the dog.
2. Dogs only Sweat Through the Pads of their Feet
Dogs have sweat glands under their paws and between their toes. Ever wondered why a dog scrapes at the ground after he poops? The scent from the glands in their paws is marked on the ground. This is a way for the dog to mark its territory.
3. Dogs can Understand over 250 words, hand gestures and body language, making them as smart as a 2 year old baby.
The average dog can understand about 165 words. The most intelligent dogs can reach 250 and beyond. Most puppies can learn sit, stay, shake ect. With time and patience, dogs can learn many tasks as well as words.
4. A Dogs Average Body Temperature is Between 101 and 102 Degrees.
Your dog may feel warm, but that does not mean he or she is sick. When my dog sleeps in my bed I rarely need to have all my blankets, as they are the best heat source you can find.
5. Puppies Sleep 90% of the Time in Their first Two Weeks.
Puppies can be a whirlwind of energy one minute and sleeping the next. Dogs in general spend a large amount of their time sleeping. Puppies can sleep up to 18 to 20 hours per day. This sleep is crucial to development of brain, immune system and muscles.
6. Dogs Have Over 42 Teeth
Puppies start out with 28 baby teeth and have 42 when fully mature. Dogs have 4 different types of teeth. Incisors are the small teeth located in the front of the mouth. The pointy teeth on the top and bottom of both sides of the mouth, also known as the fangs. Behind those are 16 premolars, if you hear your dog chewing he is using these. Then you have your molars. These are the big, heavy teeth in the back of mouth used for grinding and chewing.
7. There are More than 360 Dog Breeds.
This number is purebreds only. Humans are constantly combining different breeds to gain traits that people want or to remove traits they dislike. So this number will go up over time.
8. Dogs have a Special Feature in their eyes that Allow them to See in the Dark.
Dogs have large pupils, which allows more light in. Their retinas have a lot of light-and-motion-sensitive cells, called rods. This helps distinguish light from shadows. They also contain a mirror like membrane called the tapetum lucidum. This allows light that is not absorbed by the rods to rebound back to the retina, which lets dogs see better.
9. Dogs have Twice as many Muscles to Move their Ears as Humans.
Dogs use 18 muscles to tilt, rotate and raise their ears to help them funnel in sound from different directions. You can tell a lot about a dog by looking at its ears. A dog with erect ears looking forward means they are engaged in something. Ears slightly laid back is friendly, but tightly laid back is scared or timid.
10. Dogs can Smell Much Better than Humans.
A dog can breathe and smell at the same time. They also can take in and breath out air at the same time. They use their noses for many purposes such as finding a mate, food, babies and avoiding predators.
